The Public Works Department is responsible for a wide variety of services which include maintaining traffic control signs, signals and street markings; snow and ice control; streets; sidewalks alleys; storm sewers and City owned properties; maintenance of vehicles, streetscapes, cemeteries, City equipment, water/wastewater plants and infrastructure; provides water and wastewater testing, weekly refuse and recycling pick-up service and engineering support to all City departments and to the five-year Capital Improvements Program.

- Refuse & Recycling Workers Collect an Average of 330 Tons of Trash per Month. In 2011 6,500 trash cans throughout the downtown area were emptied
- Nearly 1,000 Residents per week choose to participate in the City's Curbside Recycling Program. This is about 24% of those eligible to participate
- In cooperation with the Forestry and Cemetery Division staff, workers spent nearly 700 hours performing vacuum leaf pickups
- The City of Carbondale has been Recognized as a "Tree City USA" for 30 consecutive years
- The City has in-house staff that maintains all City Vehicles and Equipment; from chain saws to Fire Trucks to Street Sweepers. In 2011 received the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence status for the 9th consecutive year.
- Street Maintenance crews are responsible for maintaining over 150 miles of streets and roadways. In 2011 workers sealed street joints with over 1,400 lbs. of joint sealer, painted 11,390 feet of crosswalk lines and 1,735 feet of stop bar lines, installed over 275 turn arrows and "stop" lettering pavement marking and directional symbols, installed 440 signs and posts, repaird 970 sq. yds. of pavement and cleared over 2,800 miles of snow and ice
- City crews swept over 900 lane miles of streets in 2011
- The City of Carbondale is one of the only municipalities in Southern Illinois to operate and maintain traffic signals with in-house staff
- Street Maintenance crews install over 130 lighted Holiday Decorations each year
- There are over 9,300 internments and 7,300 monuments in Oakland Cemetery. In 2011 1,100 additional lots were opened up. A much needed proper sign was installed at Oakland Cemetery
