The mission of Community Services is to improve the present and future quality of life for residents of Carbondale primarily by focusing on social and human service program.
Community Services provides some services directly and contracts with community organizations to perform other services. Services directly provided include the direction of the City’s Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity and Fair Housing functions, coordination of youth services and activities, and operation of a revolving loan fund for new and expanding businesses.
Community Services provides oversight for the City’s contracts with private agencies including programs for youth, women and senior citizens and the City’s support for the arts. It also administers the City’s support for public transportation for the community including Saluki Express, Jackson County Mass Transit District and Amtrak.
Staff of the Administrative Services Department provide support for Community Services with the Human Relations Commission, Partnership for Disabilities Issues, Youth Council, and Youth Services Advisory Committee.
