Fire Department Rescue
In 1993, the City of Carbondale Fire Department recognized the need to expand services beyond that of basic fire suppression, and began investing in specialized rescue equipment and training. The department focused its attention on developing technical skills that included high angle, trench and confined space rescue. The resulting team was the first of its kind in southern Illinois.
In 2005, the fire department added to its available resources when it became a member of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), a statewide mutual aid organization designed to coordinate the effective and efficient provision of mutual aid during emergencies or natural disasters. MABAS members benefit from the immediate assistance of personnel and equipment from other member departments as well as access to specialized equipment and expertise from across the state. MABAS special teams are comprised of fire department members from throughout Illinois including the City of Carbondale.
