Carbondale to Celebrate National Bike Month

CARBONDALE TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL BIKE MONTH 


FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE – May is National Bike Month. To celebrate, the City of Carbondale is teaming up with several area businesses and organizations to host a variety of events. The goal is to promote the many benefits of bicycling throughout the community. 

Activities include group bike rides, safety checks, repair workshops and more. Bike Month festivities will wrap up on May 31 with the City’s Annual Bicycle Luncheon at Turley Park.

The City continues to expand its bicycle network with multi-purpose bike/pedestrian paths. This summer, the multi-use path at University Mall will be extended to Reed Station Road. A traffic study will also be conducted on South Wall Street to determine whether or not bike lines could be added between Main Street and Grand Avenue.

JACKSON COUNTY COMMUNITIES TEAMING UP TO HOST MEMORIAL DAY SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

CARBONDALE – The Jackson County Board, cities of Carbondale and Murphysboro and General John A. Logan Museum are teaming up to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day in the United States on May 28.

Festivities include: 

  • Memorial Day service with special guests Gary Ecelbarger and Brian Ellis, Woodlawn Cemetery, Carbondale, 10 a.m. 
  • Wreath laying ceremony, General John A. Logan Monument, Murphysboro, 12:30 p.m.
  • BBQ lunch, 17th Street Bar & Grill, Murphysboro, 1 to 2 p.m.
  • Book signing with authors Daniel Bellware and Dr. Richard Gardiner, General John A. Logan Museum, Murphysboro, 2 to 3 p.m.

Tickets for the luncheon are available now through May 27 at the General John A. Logan Museum, City of Murphysboro Daum Building, 17th Street Bar & Grill, First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust (Carbondale and Murphysboro locations), Carbondale City Hall and Carbondale Tourism. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids 5-12.

City of Carbondale to Host Open House for Second Phase of Streetscape Project

THE CITY OF CARBONDALE TO HOST OPEN HOUSE FOR SECOND PHASE OF STREETSCAPE PROJECT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE –The City of Carbondale will host an open house on Wednesday, April 4 to present the plans to the public for the second phase of the Illinois Avenue Streetscape Improvements Project.  

This project is a continuation of the improvements of the sidewalks, streetlights and related improvements completed last summer along Illinois Avenue. The second phase will begin where the first phase ended, at Cherry Street, and will continue to Monroe Street on the north side of City Hall.

Plans will be on display from 4 to 6 p.m. in Room 103 of the Carbondale Civic Center. Community members are invited to view the plans and provide comments about the work. In addition, City officials will be on hand to answer questions. 

Similar to last summer, work on the project is expected to begin immediately after Southern Illinois University Commencement in May and conclude in August.

Illini Train to Depart 30 Minutes Later

ILLINI TRAIN TO DEPART 30 MINUTES LATER

CARBONDALE – Amtrak passengers should expect delayed departure times in the coming weeks due to track work by Canadian National Railway. 
Illini Train 392 will operate 30 minutes later at all Amtrak stations on the route beginning March 22. Saturday and Sunday routes will operate as normal. Work is expected to be complete by May 4.

CARBONDALE SEEKS INPUT ON WASHINGTON STREET VENUE

CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale, Carbondale Main Street and the Southern Illinois University School of Architecture will host a Design Charrette on March 6 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Downtown Design Center. 

Carbondale wants to hear feedback from residents on the new event venue located on Washington Street. Topics of discussion include uses for the space, designs for a permanent stage and benefits to the community.

“The City of Carbondale has demonstrated a readiness to invest in this downtown event venue, and we are happy to help get community support and impact the development of this venue,” said Meghan Cole, Executive Director for Carbondale Main Street.

“The School of Architecture, its faculty and students look forward to engaging community members in this participatory community event for the betterment of our City. This is a great opportunity to embrace what our creative design community can accomplish together,” said Dr. Craig Anz, Associate Professor of Architectural Studies at SIU.

With cool overnight temperatures expected this weekend, the City of Carbondale will open its doors to the public. 
A warming station will be set up in the Civic Center, Feb. 2-4, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. 
The Civic Center is located at 200 S. Illinois Avenue.
