Community Service Officer (Student Intern)
Dept./Div.:  Police Administration/Police Services

Nature of Work: The Community Service Officer (CSO) is a non-sworn, uniformed position responsible for assisting both sworn and civilian departmental personnel in the performance of their duties. An objective of this position is to provide training and experience to a CSO who wishes to pursue a career in law enforcement. The CSO is subject to shift assignments and duties according to the needs of the department. Work hours may vary and will not exceed 999 hours per year. The CSO reports to and is supervised and evaluated by the Police Services Sergeant.

 Essential Duties:

  1. Develop a working knowledge of and participate in the enforcement of a variety of local ordinances including those regarding animal control, parking, bicycles and abandoned vehicles.
  2. Handle non-criminal complaints as assigned; prepare appropriate reports and paperwork; handle walk-in complaints and associated reports about minor incidents.
  3. Provide support and assistance to police officers at accident, fire and crime scenes following all applicable policies and procedures.
  4. Provide assistance to the general public; provide information and directions; handle or route inquiries or problems to the appropriate department personnel.
  5. Transport department vehicles and equipment to service and repair locations; deliver and collect a variety of items as necessary.
  6. Provide assistance to the Support Services Division.
  7. Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing and by telephone and radio. Use proper radio procedures and maintain radio discipline at all times.
  8. Assist the department with community relations activities.
  9. Assist individuals who come in contact with the police for “non-crime” related situations, yet who are in need of social service assistance.
  10. Conducts House Watch/Extra Patrol security checks when required.
  11. Use tact and good judgement when interacting with co-workers, supervisors and the public. Maintain confidentiality regarding appropriate departmental matters.
  12. Effectively and efficiently operate office equipment including, but not limited to, telephones, faxes, copy machines, calculators, cameras and word processing equipment and software.
  13. Safely operate motor vehicles as necessary in the performance of duties.

Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor or proper authority for the overall operation of the department.

Work Environment: Work may be performed in an office setting or in the field, and may require the operation of a vehicle during the course of the work day to conduct field operations, respond to emergency situations, or attend meetings in a variety of weather conditions and in emergency situations. Work exposes the employee to extreme heat/cold weather.

Physical Demands: Office work is usually sedentary with occasional walking, reaching, bending, lifting and carrying objects under 25 pounds, and requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time. Field work may require extended periods of sitting or standing, driving motorized vehicles and performing physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, crouching, squatting, kneeling and working in restricted and/or confined spaces. Work also involves perceiving and/or discriminating colors, sounds, depth, and texture.

Minimum Requirements: Student: enrolled in a college/university with a  minimum of 6 credit hours per semester, interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement, have or able to obtain and maintain a valid Illinois Driver’s License and pass a police background check and drug screening.

Student Intern Appointment with appointments and reappointments made on an annual basis.

Part-time (Hours worked not to exceed 999 hours in a 12-month period)
Salary Range 2    $11.06/hr.
