Fire Prevention Programs

Print Version

Safety House

The Fire Department conducts business inspections for compliance with applicable fire codes. To keep the community aware of fire hazards, we provide instruction with an active fire education program that encompasses all age groups from pre-school to senior citizens. The addition of the mobile Fire Safety House to the Fire Department education program allows the program to be delivered to all points in the community. The Safety House allows firefighters to give hands on instruction under very real simulated conditions.

Fire Smoke Detector and Battery Program

The Department will provide and install, free of charge, a smoke detector or replacement smoke detector battery to our low income citizens that cannot afford to purchase one. Fire and Life Safety are the most important functions of our Department and we encourage our citizens in need to take advantage of this program. The life we save may be yours. If you would like a home inspection, or to host a fire-safety prevention session involving an organization or children's group, please call the Fire Department at one of the following numbers: 618-549-5302, ext. 305 or 618-457-3234.

Home and Business Inspection Programs

Home Inspections

The Department will provide an advisory inspection of your home and assist you in the proper placement of smoke detectors, as well as provide a complete safety inspection of your home.

In addition to offering an inspection performed by members of the fire department, you may access the Household Risk Analysis Checklist here. This checklist will allow you to perform an inspection at your convenience.

If you would like a home inspection, or to host a fire-safety presentation involving an organization or children's group, please call the Fire Department at one of the following phone numbers: 618-457-3299 or 618-457-3234.
Business Inspections and PrePlans

Throughout the year, the Carbondale Fire Department conducts pre-planning surveys of all Businesses and high risk occupancies inside the corporate limits. The pre-plans, once completed, increase the firefighters awareness level of the particular Business. This results in a more efficient response with less property damage and injury.

Youthful Firesetters Intervention Program

If your child has an unusual fascination with fire or a tendency to play with matches, the Department has a trained staff of personnel that will evaluate and make recommendations in adjusting that behavior.
