Education, Schools, and Libraries

Print Version

Education is a priority in Carbondale, which enjoys the influence of a leading community college (John A. Logan) and a nationally known university (Southern Illinois University-Carbondale). Excellence in education begins early, as Carbondale offers one of the finest school systems in Illinois.

Carbondale is set up into four public school systems. Giant City, Unity Point, and District 95 all serve elementary/junior high students, while District 165 serves students at the high school level. Expansion Management magazine has recognized CCHS as a Gold Medal School because of its high graduation rates and graduates’ high college-board scores.

Located just minutes from Carbondale, John A. Logan College (JALC) is a leader in providing quality education and customized training for business and industry. The Los Angeles Center for the Study of Community Colleges has ranked JALC as the fifth-best two-year college in the nation.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) is home to nearly 21,000 students from around the world. SIUC's many accolades include being named a “Best Midwestern College” and “Best Value College” by the Princeton Review.
